Replacement of your Metallic Series rower’s tank assembly is a straightforward task. The process is identical for any Metallic Series rower equipped with a plastic clutch (produced after early 2013).
As a guide, watch the video below.

Step 1
Place handle into the most forward position near the large pulley in the Forward Riser.

Step 2
Using the 5mm ratchet included with your rower, remove the handle rests and handle rest bolts. Set them aside.

Step 3
Rotate the footboard away from the tank assembly toward the rear of the rower.

Step 4
Remove the tank cover by sliding it simultaneously upward and toward the rear of the rower.

Step 5
Unclip the bungee cord from the recoil strap.

Step 6
Pull the handle so the drive strap unwinds from the clutch housing. Remove the handle and drive strap from the clutch by removing its retaining bolt with a 1/8″ Allen key.

Step 7
Remove the upper tie rods (2) and JCBs that connect the top deck to the assembly.
Note: When removing each tie rod, a barrel nut from under the top deck will come out. Set the barrel nuts aside for use in the new tank.

Step 8
Gently remove the top deck assembly. Disconnect the sensor, if equipped.

Step 9
Remove the lower tie rods (2).
Note: The barrel nuts may need to be lifted out of the bottom deck with a flat head screwdriver. Set these aside for use in the new tank assembly.
Refer to the diagram below for the parts that will be transferred to the new tank assembly. Transfer the components that have the label To Be Transferred. Keep components sub-assembled as much as possible when transferring from old tank to new tank (ie. guide pulleys and monitor).

Step 10
Remove the old tank.

Step 11
Place the new tank on the rails.

Step 12
Replace the recoil belt by clipping it onto the new plastic clutch assembly.

Step 13
Replace the sensor disk. The sensor disk slides on the inner ring with teeth facing upwards.

Step 14
Replace the lower and upper guide pulleys onto the new tank.

Step 15
Replace the right and left key brackets with the bolts (4 total — 2 on each side) using the 5mm Allen key.
Note: The right key bracket will contain the monitor on models equipped with the S4 or S4 Bluetooth monitors.

Step 16
Replace the lower tie rod bolts (2). Keep bolts loose until all compoents are assembled and aligned.

Step 17
Reconnect the sensor (if equipped) and replace the top deck.

Step 18
Replace the JCBs and upper tie rods. Ensure the tie rod opening in the barrel nuts are aligned with the tie rod. You may utilize a screwdriver to assist in replacing the barrel nut. Keep bolts loose until all components are assembled and aligned. Once all bolts are in alignment, go back and tighten the loose bolts from this and previous steps.

Step 19
Orient the handle so that the rivets in the handle collar (where the handle attaches to its strap) are facing downward.

While preserving this orientation and not twisting the handle strap, feed the handle strap through the forward riser cap, around around the large pulley in the forward riser, and into the clutch mechanism area as shown.

Step 20
Guide the handle strap inside of the upper guide pulley

Then, thread the handle strap through the openings in the clutch.

And finally, secure the handle to the clutch by tightening the small bolt with the 1/8″ Allen key.

Step 21
Gently pull on the recoil belt to wind the handle around the clutch.

While doing so, hold the handle strap taught to prevent it from slipping off the pulleys.

The handle must reach its most forward position, up against the Forward Riser.

Step 22
Pass the recoil belt over both guide pulleys (the smaller ones) in the Forward Riser. Ensure the recoil belt is aligned and sits in the grooves of both pulleys.

Step 23
Re-connect the bungee cord to the recoil belt.

Step 24
Reinstall the tank cover by sliding it simultaneously downward and toward the front of the rower. If your rower is equipped with black plastic shims to secure the front end of the top cover, ensure the cover is fully seated in them.

Step 25
Rotate the footboard forward towards the tank and align the handle rest holes with the nuts embedded in the black angled brackets of the tank assembly.

Step 26
Using the 5mm ratchet, reinstall the handle rests and their bolts.
Do not overtighten these bolts as damage to the black angled brackets may occur.
Note: Do NOT use a drill or impact driver when when installing these bolts.
